What is landed cost?
Landed cost is the total cost to get a unit of inventory onto your shelf: purchase price plus freight, duties, insurance, and handling fees.
Definition
Formula
Landed Cost per Unit = (Purchase Price + Freight + Duties + Insurance + Handling) / Units
Example
An importer buys 500 lamps at $14.00 each. The shipment adds $900 ocean freight, $560 duty, and $140 brokerage, or $3.20 per unit. Landed cost = $17.20, which turns an assumed 50% margin at a $28 retail price into 38.6%.
