What is inventory accuracy?

Inventory accuracy is the percentage of inventory records that match the physical count, measured at the SKU and location level.

Definition

Inventory accuracy answers the only question that determines whether the rest of your system is useful: when the record says 14 units in bin C-3, are there 14 units in bin C-3? Measured across a sample of SKU-location records, accuracy is the percentage that match within tolerance. How you count "match" matters. Absolute unit accuracy (52 recorded, 52 found) is the strict version. Many operations use a tolerance band, counting a record accurate if it's within 2% or within a small unit threshold, because chasing single-unit variances on bulk fasteners costs more than it returns. Pick the convention deliberately and keep it consistent, or the trend line means nothing. Benchmarks: well-run warehouses with scanning and cycle counts hold 95% to 99%. Spreadsheet-run operations typically sit at 80% to 90%, which sounds passable until you translate it: one record in six is wrong, so one pick in six starts with a surprise. Where teams trip: measuring accuracy only at the annual count, which yields one stale data point a year. Cycle counting turns accuracy into a weekly metric you can put on a wall, trend by zone and by counter, and tie to causes. Accuracy isn't the goal by itself; it's the precondition for trusting reorder points, promising stock to customers, and closing the books without a write-off fight.

Formula

Inventory Accuracy = (Records Matching Physical Count / Total Records Counted) x 100

Example

A weekly cycle count of 40 SKU-location records finds 37 matching within tolerance. Accuracy = 37 / 40 = 92.5%, down from 96% the prior month, and the misses cluster in the returns bin nobody owns.
